Every golfer has one. The “classic miss.”
For some, it’s the slice that rockets across the fairway into the woods. For others, it’s the fat shot that sends more dirt flying than the ball.
Maybe you’ve tried YouTube tips, read a quick-fix article, or even bought new gear… only to see the same mistake show up again (and again).
Frustrating, right? Feels almost hopeless.
But here’s the truth: those miss-hits aren’t random. They’re not bad luck. And it’s not because you “just can’t swing right.”
At On Point Chiropractic, we use the TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) system every day. And after seeing hundreds of golfers, we know this:
Most misses come from two things:
- Swing habits – how you move the club.
- Body limits – how your body can (or can’t) move.
When you connect those dots, you stop chasing symptoms… and start fixing the real cause.
TPI Philosophy
TPI has one simple rule: Your swing is only as good as your body lets it be.
If you don’t have enough mobility, stability, or strength, your body finds a shortcut. That shortcut might get the ball airborne, but it also creates the same old miss-hits.
That’s why TPI doesn’t start with the club. It starts with your body. With a few simple screens, we can see where you’re limited—and how that shows up in your swing. From there, we build a plan to improve your movement… and your golf.
Common Miss-Hits & Why They Happen
The Slice
Ball starts left, curves hard right, and ends up two fairways over.
- Swing Cause: Over-the-top move or open clubface.
- Body Cause: Tight upper back or stiff lead hip, making it tough to square the club.
The Hook
Ball dives left and never comes back.
- Swing Cause: In-to-out path with a closed face.
- Body Cause: Poor core stability or limited trail shoulder movement.
The Top (Thin Shot)
You hit the top of the ball, and it just skitters away.
- Swing Cause: Standing up too early.
- Body Cause: Weak glutes, tight hips, or poor lower-core control.
The Fat Shot
More ground than golf ball. Distance gone.
- Swing Cause: Hanging back or releasing too soon.
- Body Cause: Stiff ankles or weak lead-side stability.
The Shank
The one word golfers fear most.
- Swing Cause: Arms drifting away or standing up out of posture.
- Body Cause: Poor pelvic control or weak lower-body stability.
The key? Misses are predictable. If you move a certain way (or can’t move a certain way), the same miss will show up again… until you fix it.
How We Approach It at On Point Chiropractic
This is where Dr. Mark and I come in.
We’re both TPI Medical Certified and work with golfers every day who deal with these exact problems.
Instead of just handing out another swing tip, we start with:
- How your hips, shoulders, and spine move
- Where you’re strong
- Where you’re stuck
- Then we connect the body to the swing.
That connection is everything. If your slice comes from tight hips instead of a swing path issue, no “keep your elbow in” drill will fix it. But once we restore hip mobility? Suddenly, you can make the move your coach has been asking for.
That’s the power of blending medical know-how with TPI.
The Big Picture
At the end of the day, our goal is simple:
We give you the confidence to move freely and explore your untapped potential.
For some golfers, that means hitting it longer.
For others, it’s finally playing without pain.
Whatever your goal, our job is to unlock what your body can really do so you can enjoy the game more.
Final Thoughts
Next time you hit your “classic miss,” remember… it’s not random, and it’s not permanent. Every miss has a cause.
And once you know whether it’s your swing or your body, you can fix it.
At On Point Chiropractic, we love helping golfers connect those dots. Because when your body moves the way it’s designed to, golf feels smoother, swings feel easier, and the game becomes way more fun.
